W wieku 17 lat porzucił szkołę by zostać muzykiem zawodowym. Założył zespół Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble, który zdobył lokalną popularność w Austin. Skutkowało to znaczącym wzrostem popularności samego Vaughana.

Stevie Ray Vaughan's second album, Couldn't Stand the Weather, pretty much did everything a second album should do: it confirmed that the acclaimed debut was no fluke, while matching, if not bettering, the sales of its predecessor, thereby cementing Vaughan's status as a giant of modern blues. So why does it feel like a letdown? Perhaps because it simply offers more of the same, all the while relying heavily on covers. Of the eight songs, half are covers, while two of his four originals are instrumentals -- not necessarily a bad thing, but it gives the impression that Vaughan threw the album together in a rush, even if he didn't. Nevertheless, Couldn't Stand the Weather feels a bit like a holding pattern, since there's no elaboration on Double Trouble's core sound and no great strides forward, whether it's in Vaughan's songwriting or musicianship. Still, as holding patterns go, it's a pretty enjoyable one, since Vaughan and Double Trouble play spiritedly throughout the record. With its swaggering, stuttering riff, the title track ranks as one of Vaughan's classics, and thanks to a nuanced vocal, he makes W.C. Clark's "Cold Shot" his own. The instrumentals -- the breakneck Lonnie Mack-styled "Scuttle Buttin'" and "Stang's Swang," another effective demonstration of Vaughan's jazz inclinations -- work well, even if the original shuffle "Honey Bee" fails to make much of an impression and the cover of "Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)" is too reminiscent of Jimi Hendrix's original. So, there aren't many weaknesses on the record, aside from the suspicion that Vaughan didn't really push himself as hard as he could have, and the feeling that if he had, he would have come up with something a bit stronger.

In his all too brief career, Stevie Ray Vaughan, by virtue of being a true master of the guitar, achieved several things that most musicians only aspire to. First, with his stinging attack and pure tone, he is one of those guitarists that is instantly recognizable, no matter what the surroundings. His fluid method of phrasing never varied—from the jazzy “Lenny” to “Goin’ Down” (captured here live with Jeff Beck), the moment he strapped on a Fender Stratocaster, the sound was pure Stevie. His pattern of introducing a solo with a slight call and response section made the listener feel surrounded by a six-string horn section, and when he would shut his eyes and lean forward, hunched over the guitar, looking ready to topple over at any moment, well that’s when Stevie would burn. In a moment’s notice his fingers would fly over the fretboard, faster than the rest, but more literate as well. Vaughan always had something to say, and never played fast to prove himself—he never needed to. From the first cut in this box set, 1977’s “Thunderbird” with Paul Ray and the Cobras, to the last, “Leave My Girl Alone” from his final concert in 1990, his guitar and vastly underrated vocals are simply head and shoulders above the rest of the blues guitar slingers of the period.

Which brings us to his second laudable achievement. Although he would have made his mark no matter what genre he had chosen, Vaughan, not unlike a blues Gram Parsons, took a moribund music style and pumped new blood into its veins. Few listeners outside of hardcore fanatics listened to the blues in the “skinny tie new wave” 1980s—the original legends had either quit recording or died, and other than a few pockets that could contain a “scene” such as Chicago’s South Side or parts of Texas, the blues had few “up and comers”. I remember hearing “Texas Flood” off of Vaughan’s debut album in a record store and standing stock still until the song finished. To hear someone living play the blues with such emotion and intensity was like finding water in a long-dry well. I wore out copy after copy of it on tape, playing it for whoever would listen. And many did, even those people who didn’t know Howlin’ Wolf from Hound Dog Taylor. And they all loved it. It’s impossible to imagine the rebirth of the blues—from Johnny Lang to Kenny Wayne Shepard et al—without him.

Over the years Vaughan was able to play with those artists he grew up listening to, from Albert King (his “Ask Me No Questions” is included here) to Lonnie Mack, Buddy Guy, Albert Collins to Jeff Beck. In fact, probably one of the few he missed out on, his favorite artist to cover, Jimi Hendrix, well, he has the rest of eternity to make up for that lost time. Like his hero Hendrix, Vaughan was a flamboyant, destructive talent. From assorted chemicals to hats festooned with wild plumage, Stevie was larger than life. Thankfully he was able to defeat his demons a few years before he died, and the resulting music showed a greater maturity without sacrificing the manic sparking brilliance of that created during his “drug days”. He went on to record “Family Style” with his talented older brother Jimmie Vaughan (formerly of The Fabulous Thunderbirds), and while it didn’t sound like anything either of the two had done before, it did give a hint as to how the blues would be played on say....Mars.

Of the 54 cuts on this collection, 36 are previously unreleased. While little “new” music is heard, you listen to the 75th version of “Pride and Joy” for the same reason you listen to multiple versions of “Cherokee” by Charlie Parker, simply because both were geniuses who found new ways to communicate each time they picked up an instrument. Included is a DVD containing six songs from the 1989 Austin City Limits episode featuring SRV and Double Trouble. Hopefully this means the full show will be released at some point, because it shows a great guitarist being backed by a stellar band (Chris Layton, Tommy Shannon and Reese Wynans-Double Trouble).

Stevie Ray Vaughan had already created his legend when he died in 1990, with over a decade of craftsmanship and heart captured on record. While not nearly enough, it is sufficient to convert the uninitiated, and becalm the rest of us who miss so deeply the soul and passion of Stevie. It’s been a quiet 11 years.

Numer siedem daje trochę oddechu , to kompozycja B.Guya z uspokajającą i czysto brzmiącą gitarą leadera. Wprowadza nas to łagodnie w klimat następnego utworu , to powolna ballada wypełniona nastrojowymi solówkami Stevie’go. Lenny to imię żony Vaughan’a i to jej poświęcony jest ostatni utwór . Tutaj mamy znowu piękną i subtelnie zagraną balladę.

Następny utwór to typowa bluesowa ballada. "The Sky Is Crying" tytułowy utwór jest powszechnie uważany za bluesowy standart. Niestety bez wokalu. Kolejny utwór to niezwykle dynamiczny "Wham"! Niesamowite solówki i riffy. Kolejna jest ciężka bluesowa ballada "May I Have A Talk With You". Następny utwór to najbardziej typowy 12 taktowy blues "Close To You". Natępny utwór to typowy przedstawiciel bluesowego Shuffle. "So Excited" pokazuje niesamowitą dynamikę nawet wolnego riffu, na którym jest zbudowane. Trzeba usłyszeć całość, by docenić.

Inspiring!!! . . . and Depressing

Before the Montreaux Jazz Festival, before Bowie's "Let's Dance" album, before "Texas Flood", before the Grammys, before the cocaine and alcohol abuse, before the redemption of sobriety, before the joyful "In Step" and "Family Style"..... before August 27, 1990..... before the all-star tributes, before "The Legendary Stevie RAY Vaughan"......

There was an unknown, hardworking 24-year-old gunslinger named Little Stevie Vaughan, learning his craft the hard way in the trenches of the Austin Texas clubs, trying his darndest to get out of the shadow of his famous older brother Jimmie.

It wouldn't be long.

Anyone lucky enough to have been in the audience at this early live show, on April Fools Day in 1980, could have told you that.

Here we have a rare glimpse into the evolution of a blues legend.

For those of us who play the guitar, this album is inspiring. I'll tell you why:

Even at this young age, Stevie still has that musical "feel" that you just can't teach. He is never musically lost, seeming to know exactly where to go every moment. His playing is filled with the passion of youth.... but even with all of that, this is still---quite clearly--- an immature and not-yet-fully-developed Stevie. His solos aren't as complicated as they WILL be.... the rhythm work is a bit more repetitive than it WILL be.... his technique is a bit sloppier than it WILL be.... it's like peeking over the shoulder of a teenage Picasso, and seeing glimpses of "Guernica."

I say this is inspiriing, because it shows that even our "Holy Legends" did not drop, God-like, from the sky fully-formed. They had to WORK HARD, they grew, they changed... they IMPROVED. In short, they were HUMAN, just like you and me. Listening to this album we are reminded that there was a time when Stevie Ray Vaughan was just Little Stevie Vaughan-- a great guitar player, but not yet a legendary one.

But the album is also depressing.... because we are left wondering: "How much better would he have gotten if he had never gotten into that helicopter?"

Because, even then--- even during the recording of "In Step" and "Family Style"--- he was still improving.

I guess this world was just not yet ready for a guitarist even BETTER than "The Legendary Stevie Ray Vaughan."

I miss him dearly.

This is Stevie's third album, originally released in October 1985, and for "Soul To Soul", Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble abandoned their original trio format and included keyboardist Reese Wynans and (occationally) saxist Joe Sublett.

The music hasn't changed too much, though. It's still a superb blend of blues and rock, and even though Vaughan's guitar is perhaps a little less prominent on some songs, his playing is still masterful.
The material is very strong, with only one or two lesser tunes - like the forgettable opener "Say What!". "Soul To Soul" is highlighted by the slow blues ballad "Ain't Gone 'N' Give Up On Love", the swinging "Empty Arms" in 2/4 time, and the terrific rockers "Change It", "Lookin' Out The Window" and "Look At Little Sister" (excellent piano playing on that last one, and a nice saxophone solo as well).

Stevie also covers Howlin' Wolf's "You'll Be Mine", and considering that no-one in the world has yet been able to match the vocal power and ferocious attitude of the Wolf, and probably never will, he does a good job with it.

The three bonus tracks consist of a short interview snippet and two songs. Well, three songs, actually, since Vaughan plays a medley of "Third Stone From The Sun" and Hendrix' "Little Wing".
They're perhaps not quite as interesting as some of the bonus cuts on the other three remastered Stevie Ray Vaughan-albums, but they're not bad by any means, and Vaughan's playing is great as always.

"Soul To Soul" has a very strong track list, and it is highly recommended to any and all lovers of blues-rock and contemporary blues music. It is not Stevie Ray's best album, that would be "Texas Flood", but it is head and shoulders above almost everything else out there.
Modern electric blues rarely gets any better. In fact, it rarely gets this good.

Upon first glance, Epic/Legacy's 2007 collection Solos, Sessions & Encores might seem like little more than bottom-of-the-barrel scrapings, the last possible release that could be cobbled together from Stevie Ray Vaughan's plundered vaults. After all, this consists entirely of recordings where SRV was either a guest or a sideman, taking a spotlight on-stage or stepping into a studio to lay down a solo, and for many musicians such extracurricular activity is often tossed off, so it wouldn't add much to their legacy. Not so for Stevie Ray Vaughan. Part of his legend is built upon his boundless love for playing, of which his solo work and albums with Double Trouble was just part of the picture, so the 14 tracks on Solos, Sessions & Encores help fill out the details as everything from a previously unreleased 1978 cut with his former lover Lou Ann Barton to live recordings from ten years later is collected. Roughly half of this disc is previously unreleased -- including a blistering "Albert's Shuffle" with Albert Collins, a low-down "Change It" with Jimmie Vaughan, and a slow, smoldering "Texas Flood" where Bonnie Raitt stands toe to toe with Stevie -- but the unearthed gems matter less than the context. By collecting all this stray material, ranging from straight-up blues sessions like Marcia Ball's "Soulful Dress" to SRV's big breakthrough on David Bowie's "Let's Dance," this album showcases Vaughan's range and generosity as a player. Here, his skill for mimicry seems sympathetic, as he can allude to the right player at the right time in a variety of settings, all the while without ever abandoning his style. Plus, there's just some fantastic playing here, highlighted by a ferocious "Goin' Down" with Jeff Beck and a version of "The Sky Is Crying" with Albert and B.B. King. As sheer music, this is very enjoyable, but Solos, Sessions & Encores is most noteworthy for how it finally fills out SRV's legacy by capturing what a giving guitarist he was -- based on this, there are few who function better as a sideman than he. It may feel a bit like a fifth disc in a box set rather than its own standalone compilation, but Solos, Sessions & Encores is nevertheless a welcome addition to his catalog.

Live at Montreux 1982 & 1985 is a historically significant recording, presenting Stevie Ray Vaughan in the biggest show of his life to that date, then three years later, once he had become a star. The 1982 show is essentially the show that got his career started. He met both Jackson Browne and David Bowie after his set, and they were so impressed that Browne volunteered use of his studio (for free!) for Stevie to record what would become his debut album, and Bowie recruited him as lead guitarist for the Let's Dance album and tour (alas, the tour was not to be). However, not everyone was so impressed. In fact, there are choruses of boos that follow nearly every tune. Vaughan was basically a nobody at the time, playing very electric blues at the end of a mostly acoustic program. But he had done enough bar gigs to completely rise above it, and he plays with the passion and hunger of a young musician getting his big chance. He's not really an engaging frontman at this point in his career, but man, can he play that guitar. And he simply never lets up. Even at this stage, his tone and style are pretty close to fully formed, and it's easy to see how he could become the guitar hero he ended up being. The 1985 show is quite a contrast. Vaughan had become a star, and it shows in so many ways. He had developed more of a stage persona, with showier moves and infinitely more presence as a frontman. Double Trouble also now included Reese Wynans on keyboards, which, along with Vaughan's addition of a wah-wah pedal, really expanded the sound. Vaughan has many fiery moments on this set as well, but he also loses focus during several solos, and seems more than content to share or even hand over the spotlight to fellow Texas guitar legend Johnny Copeland. Vaughan seems a bit worn out, and it wouldn't be long before he got sober. Even so, there are clear moments of brilliance and this time the audience is fully behind him. Live at Montreux 1982 & 1985 is a vital document for fans, showing the raw ingredients that would make him a star, then comparing it to what happened once he got there. It's a great look at the rise of one of rock's most revered guitar players.

Live Alive is an electric blues album compiled from four live performances by Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble. The performances were recorded on July 16, 1985 at the Montreux Jazz Festival; July 17-18, 1986 at the Austin Opera House; and July 19, 1986 at Dallas Starfest. Much of the album was overdubbed in the studio.

The 1985 Montreux performance was much better received than the 1982 visit, during which some of the crowd booed Vaughan's hard blues sound. The song selection for Live Alive displays many of SRV's biggest influences: Jimi Hendrix ("Voodoo Child (Slight Return)"), Stevie Wonder ("Superstition"), Howlin' Wolf ("Commit A Crime"), and Buddy Guy ("Mary Had A Little Lamb").

Stevie Ray Vaughan had always been a phenomenal guitarist, but prior to In Step, his songwriting was hit or miss. Even when he wrote a classic modern blues song, it was firmly within the genre's conventions; only on Soul to Soul's exquisite soul-blues "Life Without You" did he attempt to stretch the boundaries of the form. As it turns out, that was the keynote for In Step, an album where Vaughan found his own songwriting voice, blending blues, soul, and rock in unique ways, and writing with startling emotional honesty. Yes, there are a few covers, all well chosen, but the heart of the album rests in the songs he co-wrote with Doyle Bramhall, the man who penned the Soul to Soul highlight "Change It." Bramhall proved to be an ideal collaborator for Vaughan; tunes like the terse "Tightrope" and the dense "Wall of Denial" feel so intensely personal, it's hard to believe that they weren't the product of just one man. Yet the lighter numbers — the dynamite boogie "The House Is Rockin'" and the breakneck blues of "Scratch-n-Sniff" — are just as effective as songs. Of course, he didn't need words to make effective music: "Travis Walk" is a blistering instrumental, complete with intricate fingerpicking reminiscent of the great country guitarist Merle Travis, while the shimmering "Riviera Paradise" is every bit as lyrical and lovely as his previous charmer, "Lenny." The magnificent thing about In Step is how it's fully realized, presenting every facet of Vaughan's musical personality, yet it still soars with a sense of discovery. It's a bittersweet triumph, given Vaughan's tragic death a little over a year after its release, yet it's a triumph all the same.

"Life Without You" is essentially a long jam, with two extended guitar parts separated by break in which (with bassist Tommy Shannon and drummer Chris Layton still playing) Vaughan completes a short monologue on his troubles with substances abuse and his newly-found sobriety. He asks those in the audience to take care of themselves so they can "be there for the ones who love you and need you the most."
