1978's Northwinds, David Coverdale's second solo album after the demise of Deep Purple, is a powerful dose of blues- and R&B-influenced hard rock. This album -- the final new release on Purple Records -- is also a huge leap forward in quality from the previous year's White Snake, a tentative and generally cautious record. As with White Snake, Northwinds was produced by Deep Purple bassist Roger Glover and is anchored by guitarist Micky Moody and keyboardist Tim Hinckley. Bassist Alan Spenner and drummer Tony Newman comprise the rhythm section. "Keeping on Giving Me Love" is loose and funky and a blowout jam wraps it up. The gorgeous ballad "Northwinds" builds to a gospel-like fervor; Coverdale's voice is warm and smooth and Hinckley's dominant keyboards are supported by Moody's tasteful rhythm guitar. "Give Me Kindness" is a slab of R&B-based hard rock with horns present to add spice. Initially, Coverdale's slow, soft vocals and Hinckley's effective keyboards provide the soul of the splendid "Time & Again," but Graham Preskett's electric violin and, ultimately, Coverdale's surging voice aid the overall swell of power at the finale. "Only My Soul" offers a rich musical stew of introductory organ and acoustic guitar, steady drums, biting little guitar fills, supple bass licks, Glover's synthesizer fill and more electric violin lines from Preskett, but Coverdale's ethereal singing holds it all together. The hard-charging rocker "Breakdown" is about the disintegration of Deep Purple. Spitfire's 2000 remastered CD reissue includes two solid bonus tracks: the spry groove rocker"Shame on the Devil" and the melodic pop/rock song "Sweet Mistreater." The reissue liner notes include an informative essay by Simon Robinson and a handful of rare photos.

After Deep Purple crumbled in the mid-'70s, vocalist David Coverdale began a solo career with 1977's White Snake. Before too long, Coverdale would adopt that album title as the name of his new band. Coverdale gathered future Whitesnake guitarist Micky Moody, keyboardist Tim Hinckley, bassist De Lisle Harper, and noted session drummer Simon Phillips. Background singers Liza Strike, Helen Chappelle, and Barry St. John are prominently featured, too. Uncredited horn players also contribute to the album. Ex-Deep Purple bassist Roger Glover produced the album and also added some synthesizer parts. White Snake is a tentative, generally disappointing album because Coverdale is clearly flummoxed regarding the direction the music should take. There are some blues-rock numbers that benefit from Coverdale's rich, throaty vocals and Moody's reliable guitar parts. (They would settle on this style for Whitesnake.) However, much of the album shows Coverdale's love of R&B and soul. Remember that it was this route that Deep Purple took, particularly on 1974's Stormbringer, that drove guitarist Ritchie Blackmore to quit the band in disgust. "Lady" manages to blend R&B and hard rock elements effectively thanks to Moody's slithering guitar and the punchy horns. The smoldering "Blindman" is the best song because of its blues-rock purity; it actually sounds like a blend of Free, Bad Company, and, ultimately, future Whitesnake. "Goldies Place" is a blue-eyed stab at R&B and funk. "Whitesnake" is a guilty pleasure rocker; the sexual symbolism surpasses mere double entendre, but it's not quite hardcore porn. "Peace Lovin' Man" goes so far as to approach gospel-influenced soul. "Hole in the Sky" is a smooth, dreamy ballad. Spitfire Records' 2000 CD reissue includes decent liner notes and first takes of "Peace Lovin' Man" and "Sunny Days" as bonus tracks.

To już płyta firmowana nazwą Whitesnake, ale czy tak naprawdę coś się zmieniło? Czy mamy tu Coverdale’a, jakiego wcześniej nie znaliśmy?... Finisz Deep Purple był przykry i wokalista zarzekał się, że już nigdy nie wystąpi w tym zespole. Rozczarowania rozczarowaniami, ale jednak debiutancki album Białego Węża to poniekąd kontynuacja tego, co Coverdale zrobił z Purple. I chyba nie należy się dziwić. Ani cokolwiek zarzucać. Bo przecież Purplom zawdzięcza praktycznie wszystko: nie tylko przepustkę do sławy, ale i nieocenioną szkołę życia rockowego artysty... I jak byśmy nie potraktowali wpływów przeszłości, trzeba przyznać, że narodziny grupy Whitesnake zaowocowały ciekawym albumem.
Coverdale nigdy nie lubił, kiedy przyklejano mu etykietki, zwłaszcza tę z napisem: heavy metal. Gitarzysta Bernie Marsden przy jakiejś okazji nazwał Whitesnake „głośnym zespołem rhythm’n’bluesowym”. I na pewno jest w tym dużo prawdy. Grupa z wyczuciem i wdziękiem pląsa na pograniczu hard rocka i rhythm’n’bluesa (Take Me With You, Trouble, Nighthawk (Vampire Blues). A jeśli jesteśmy już przy konkretach... Bardzo ciekawie wypadło instrumentalne boogie Belgian Tom’s Hat Trick, gdzie świetnie brzmią gitarowe unisona. Takie małe niewinne jam session... Miło też słucha się soulowo zabarwionych ballad Love To Keep You Warm, The Time Is Right For Love. Mamy też niespodziankę-ciekawostkę... Frapującą przeróbkę beatlesowskiego Day Tripper... Żeby jednak nie było zbyt różowo, wspomnijmy, że Lie Down (A Modern Love Song) brzmi nieco infantylnie, a flirt z soulem w Free Flight okazał się zupełnym niewypałem.
W sumie jednak zostaje wrażenie pozytywne. Album Trouble wbrew tytułowi nie wprawił chyba nikogo w zakłopotanie.

Following up the splendid Saints & Sinners album was no easy task, but 1984's Slide It In turned out to be an even greater triumph for David Coverdale's Whitesnake. From the boisterous machismo of "Spit It Out" and "All or Nothing" to the resigned despair of "Gambler" and "Standing in the Shadow," and the embarrassingly silly title track, everything seems to click. For hit singles, look no further than the twin guitar attack of "Guilty of Love" and the sheer poetry and emotion of "Love Ain't No Stranger," one of the decade's greatest power ballads, bar none. Not to be outdone, "Slow an' Easy" is a masterpiece of sexual tension and the kind of power-blues which no one does as well as Whitesnake. On a quirky historical note, Coverdale fired most of the band soon after the album's release, replacing them with younger, prettier faces with which to better conquer America. For that purpose, Geffen Records even released a re-recorded version of Slide It In with flashy soloing from new guitarist John Sykes, sparking an ongoing debate as to which version is better.

The European and Canadian edition of the album contains the original mix. This mix features a stronger presence of keyboards by Jon Lord, and the bass is more noticeable.
The U.S. mix lowers the keyboards and bass in the mix, and is more orientated around the guitars and drums. The U.S. version features some different guitar solos to the European/Canadian edition, with the addition of John Sykes as a third guitarist layered on top of the original guitar parts recorded by Mel Galley and Micky Moody.
In general, the fan consensus is that the U.S. edition sounds more slickly produced and radio-friendly for the American marketplace, whereas the original shows the bands classic rock roots. Vocalist David Coverdale would take the slick production of Slide It In to an even higher level on Whitesnake's follow-up album.

David Coverdale zapowiadał, że to jego pożegnalna płyta, a także, że ma zamiar wrócić na niej do swych ideałów z początków kariery. I to mu sie chyba udało... Klimat bluesa czuć w każdym utworze, Coverdale śpiewa z oddaniem i feelingiem już dawno nie słyszanym u niego tak wyraźnie.

Dominują utwory utrzymane w ponurym klimatach, śpiewane z wyraźnym stylizowaniem skargi w glosie - "Too Many Tears", "Stay With Me", "Can't Go On", "Take Me Back Again". Są one też raczej słabszą stroną płyty. Powiem szczerze - osobiście kilka chętnie bym wyrzucił... albo połączył w jeden i skrócił, doprawdy, album wcale by na tym nie ucierpiał.

David pokazuje jednak, ze smęcenie to nie jedyne co potrafi - świadczą o tym takie utwory jak tytułowy "Restless Heart" (zdecydowanie mocny punkt albumu) albo pogodne, acz dynamiczne piosenki "All In The Name Of Love" i "You're So Fine". Bardzo udana kompozycja zamykająca płytę - "Woman Trouble Blues" - świadczy również7 o tym, że niegdysiejsza praca z Jimmym Pagem nie pozostała bez wpływu na twórczość Coverdale'a. Ten sam wpływ słychać zresztą też w kompozycji "Take Me Back Again". Kompozycji, dodajmy, także udanej.

Saints & Sinners – szósty album muzyczny grupy rockowej Whitesnake wydany w listopadzie 1982 roku. Nagrany w okresie rozpadu zespołu w związku ze skomplikowaną sytuacją rodzinną i zawodową lidera, David'a Coverdale'a. Przez wiele lat trwały spekulacje fanów dotyczące tego albumu, a wiążące się z osobą perkusisty. Nie było dokładnie wiadomo kto zarejestrował partie perkusji podczas sesji: czy Ian Paice czy Cozy Powell. Dopiero w późnych latach 90. podczas jednego z wywiadów David Coverdale potwierdził, iż w rzeczywistości był to Ian Paice.

Snakebite is the first album by Whitesnake released in mid-1978. The CD is composed of two separate productions: a 4-track EP and four tracks from lead singer David Coverdale's 1977 solo album Northwinds.

Shortly after producing and then touring Northwinds, Coverdale found his new band was already producing and testing new material. Thus they returned to the studio to capture this new found energy.

The resulting mini-album (Snakebite EP) features the cover song "Ain't No Love in the Heart of the City", originally performed by Bobby Bland. Although it is now considered a classic Whitesnake song, according to Coverdale it wasn't planned that way: "Originally I had no plans to actually record ‘Ain’t No Love in the Heart of the City’…if you can you believe it…a song that connects so deeply with so many that I still play it today, 25 years later." Some of the songs from this album would be captured later in 1978 and released on the 1980 Live...In the Heart of the City live album.

Przyznam, że czekałem na tę płytę z dużą niecierpliwością, ale jednocześnie z pewnym niepokojem, ponieważ zawsze o wiele bardziej ceniłem wczesne wcielenie grupy niż pudelmetalową poczwarkę z końca lat 80., z której spuścizny Coverdale czerpie od czasu reaktywowania Whitesnake w grudniu 2002 r. I rzeczywiście po pierwszym przesłuchaniu miałem mieszane uczucia. Jeśli chodzi o brzmienie grupy, wykonanie utworów, a także wizerunek, Whitesnake AD 2008 jest zdecydowanie epigonem popmetalowej sceny sprzed dwudziestu lat, z tym, że w znacznie cięższym wydaniu. Na szczęście bronią się przede wszystkim utwory, chwilami do złudzenia przypominające niektóre klasyki sprzed lat. Im więcej słucham „Good to Be Bad”, tym bardziej doceniam niemal roczny wysiłek Coverdale’a i Aldricha w przygotowaniu tej płyty. Udało im się w moim odczuciu wypracować stylistykę, która doskonale łączy ciężkie, efekciarskie riffy i przebojowe refreny rodem z płyt Whitesnake z lat 1984-89 z bluesowymi korzeniami zespołu. Co ciekawe, utwory te brzmią jednocześnie bardzo nowocześnie i świeżo. Coverdale nie dał się też na szczęście ponieść męskiej menopauzie i nie zanurzył się całkowicie w swojej przeszłości. W piosenkach z nowej płyty słychać doskonale echa jego dwóch poprzednich, najbardziej dojrzałych muzycznie albumów, szczególnie w spokojnych momentach "Good to Be Bad". W balladach najłatwiej także zauważyć, jak bardzo zmienił się głos Coverdale’a – wbrew temu, co powie wielu oddanych fanów – znacznie osłabł, stał się bardziej matowy i ochrypnięty. Nie zmienia to jednak faktu, że jak zwykle Coverdale prezentuje szerokie spektrum możliwości, śpiewając w charakterystyczny dla siebie sposób. Nie zdradzam szczegółów odnośnie poszczególnych utworów, bo każdy na pewno sam chętnie zapozna się z tą płytą. Dodam tylko, że „Good to Be Bad” może spokojnie pretendować do miana rockowej płyty roku.

Despite the massive talents of vocalist David Coverdale and his supporting cast of musicians (not to mention the unimpeachable resumé of producer Martin Birch), Come an' Get It was another maddeningly average Whitesnake album. A thoroughly boring set that played it too safe and yielded no lasting live favorites, Come an' Get It was competent to the max -- in the hands of a debuting artist, it may have qualified as a classic -- but for a near-supergroup of such experience and pedigree, it instead smacked of severe underachievement. Rare highlights include the driving energy of "Hot Stuff," the lively bar-room piano of "Wine, Women and Song," and the wistful, acoustic balladry of "Till the Day I Die." But these share space with run-of-the-mill bluesy rockers like "Don't Break My Heart Again" and "Would I Lie to You" -- all of them hard to fault, but equally impossible to praise. Yawn! Even the quasi-epic "Child of Babylon" fails to live up to initial promise, a half-hearted effort that easily defines the entire record's abiding sense of indifference. No doubt a reflection of Coverdale's own fluctuating interest in the group, Come an' Get It's confounding mediocrity would thankfully give way to the just as inexplicable brilliance of 1982's Saints & Sinners and 1984's Slide It In -- a two-towered climax of Whitesnake's career that displayed a newfound zest in urgency and inspiration. [The 2007 EMI edition features six bonus tracks.]

Its deluxe packaging includes a 90-page hardback book, featuring a 10,000-word interview with coverdale and an introductory essay by Classic Rock's Geoff Barton. Most temptingly of all, there is previously unreleased material: two CDs of BBC live recordings from the 1979 and 1980 Reading Festivals, and on DVD, 45 minutes of so-called 'official bootleg' footage from a 1980 concert in Washington DC."-emisessions.com
EMI will release a super deluxe box set of Whitesnake’s Sunburst Years. Collecting together all studio and live albums, two previously unreleased BBC concerts, a limited 7”, DVD and a 90-page book with new interviews and previously unseen photos and rare memorabilia, all overseen by David Coverdale. Following the split of Deep Purple, after three years as their lead singer David Coverdale released two solo albums: ‘Whitesnake’ (1977) and ‘Northwinds’ (1978), both sowing the seeds for what would eventually become Whitesnake. Whitesnake originally formed in March 1978 to promote the release of ‘Northwinds’, but eventually releasing the 4-track 7” ‘Snakebite EP’ in June of that year, followed by the full-length debut ‘Trouble’ before the end of 1978. Jon Lord and Ian Paice, both founder members of Deep Purple, would augment the line-up, helping steer the band close to the top of the charts in 1981 (only kept off the top spot Adam & The Ants’ ‘Kings Of The Wild Frontier’). By the end of 1982 with the release of “Saints & Sinners”, the band had released five studio albums, two live albums and an EP. These earlier, ‘bluesier’ recordings the band made before signing to Geffen (for ‘Slide It In’ (1984) and the 8 million-selling ‘1987’, including the US no.1 ‘Here I Go Again’), were from a band certainly big enough to sell out Hammersmith Odeon four nights in a row, or headline 1983’s Donington Monsters Of Rock festival, though a very different beast to the world conquering ‘1987’ version of the band. Box 'O' Snakes - The Sunburst Years 1978 - 1982 is an 11-disc set - including the original 1982 version of ‘Here I Go Again’ - featuring nine audio CDs, a DVD and a 7” white vinyl replica of the ‘Snakebite EP’, the very first release from Whitesnake, remastered versions of the five studio albums and two live albums Whitesnake released from 1978-1982, plus two previously unreleased live albums recorded for the BBC at the 1979 & 1980 Reading Festivals. The DVD features 10 promo videos, four rare BBC TV performances and a previously unreleased US live show filmed in 1980. The release is housed in a lift-off-lid box and also contains a 90-page hardback book featuring an introduction from Classic Rock magazine’s Geoff Barton, plus a new 10,000 word interview with David Coverdale and Bernie Marsden, with many unpublished photos and rare memorabilia from Marden’s personal collection, as well as a large colour poster.
