Poland's Boguslaw Balcerak has seemingly come out of nowhere to become one of the most exciting players on the Metal scene. His neoclassical blistering style is certainly reminiscent of the great Yngwie Malmsteen, you'd have to be a fool not to make the comparison. Having said that, there's certainly room for more brilliant guitar work, and he IS brilliant, every solo shows you that.

Gerry Rafferty is a huge talent, but a reluctant star. Management struggles and sundry other hindrances limited his output, but couldn't avert the Scot from releasing two legendary singles -- the Tarantino-ized "Stuck in the Middle With You" and the unforgettable "Baker Street," the latter included on this record. Just a glimpse of John Patrick Byrne's cool cover art lets the listener know City to City houses Rafferty's day in the sun as he conquers the world one metropolis at a time, his guitar and amp in tow. Setting out in his apocalyptic "Ark," each song radiates the confidence of a master craftsman cruising in his prime, constructing brilliant pop confections with top-flight support while awaiting the crunch of civilization. The dreamy reality check "Baker Street" rightfully remains one of the greatest cuts in pop history. Forever-lost B-side "Big Change in Weather" further demonstrates Rafferty was on a rare roll. Domestic valentine "Right Down the Line" snugly followed to the height of the charts, and third release, "Home and Dry," while not of an immortal status, stands as a quality song. He even stomps out a smooth hoedown on the title track. Rafferty's turns of phrase and tight composition skills create a fresh sound and perspective all his own. Any diverse style (and he attempts many) filters through his unique mindset, resulting in a classic platter buoyed by many moments of sheer genius. "Whatever's written in your heart, that's all that matters."

Yazoo's debut album, 'Upstairs at Eric's'. Released in July '82, the album explored the pair's unusual potential to stunning effect. From the raunchy synth funk of 'Goodbye 70s' to the chilling darkness of 'Winter Kills', it was one of the most complete debut albums to have emerged throughout the decade as a whole, with the cover image of dismembered showroom dummies echoing the music's sense of dislocation from the standard pop formula.

Taped in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on the final night of Rush's 2002 Vapor Trails tour, this double-disc set finds Canada's famous power trio giving its all for 40,000 of the most rabid Rush fans ever gathered under one sky. Sure, the guys are all pushing 50. Bassist-vocalist Geddy Lee strains to hit some high notes, and guitar wizard Alex Lifeson occasionally sounds a tad bored. But by and large they remain at or near the peak of their powerful game--and, from the looks of it, they're having more fun than ever. Drawing from 15 of their 17 studio albums and leaning heavily on Vapor Trails, they celebrate their stylistic range (progressive-leaning classic rock to dense but melodic post-grunge) and the far broader scope of drummer Neil Peart's considered lyrics.

The concert alone pushes three hours, and disc 2 offers a lengthy documentary and multi-angle options for three songs. The Dolby Digital 5.1 or 2.0 sound quality is generally good, if overly compressed. Peart's drums sound fabulous, in fact: splashy and tight and far more natural than they've sounded on any Rush album, live or otherwise, in years. Not to be missed--and needlessly hard to find--is a 1975 promotional clip for Fly by Night's "Anthem." This set is a must, even for the doubtful.
